Wild foraging

After 33 years of marriage my wife says it’s quite hard to think of anything to buy me for Christmas or my birthday.

Nevertheless, she is quite inventive when it comes to presents. Last Christmas, for example, she enrolled me on a one day forage and food course so we could go foraging for wild edibles followed by a wild food lunch on a date to be confirmed.

To be honest, while I appreciated the thought, I felt a bit ambivalent about it. Part of me didn’t really fancy an 8.30am appointment in the woods, followed by several hours’ scrabbling around searching for herbs, mushrooms, berries, and goodness knows what else.

On the other hand, I told myself, it might provide some content for this blog. After all, who doesn’t want to read about wild edibles?

Dear reader, at ten o’clock this morning, shortly before I was due to leave the house to get my annual flu vaccination, my wife confessed she had got the day wrong. Instead of tomorrow, October 12, the foraging course was today. Oh no!

Sadly, I suspect my days of wild foraging are over before they have even begun. If however you have ever tried it, do comment below because I’d like to know what I’m missing.
