I pray so I must believe in God

I was in Cafe Nero at Kings Cross station on Tuesday when I was approached by two young women conducting a survey.

"Can you spare a few minutes?" they said. "We're asking people about God."

"I'm probably not the right person to ask," I said. "I don't believe in God."

"Do you pray?" said one brightly.

"Yes," I said, "but only if my football team is one-nil down with three minutes to play."

"There you are," she said, a note of triumph entering her voice. "You do believe in God!"

And with that she ticked a box and moved on to the next customer.
